My wife and I met in cyberspace, just one of the aspects of our relationship that signifies the new age we live in. After one year of bliss and carefree dating, I knew it was time to make sure this would last for a lifetime. The proposal was not traditional, but it was perfect. We were expressing our deep feelings for each other as we were driving, and I realized that I could wait no longer. I asked her to marry me right then and there. She was in tears as we pulled into the mall to pick out the perfect ring.
She loved princess-cut diamonds, and I was sure that I would settle for nothing less than a pristine, beautiful diamond that was as clear as my feelings for her were. Given our situation at the time, I was unsure exactly of what I could afford. I had my eyes on the same setting that my mother and grandmother had always worn, because it was a somewhat affordable option. We were on the verge of settling for a traditional 24-karat setting with a wonderful diamond when I asked her if this was the one she truly loved. The look in her eyes didn't match her enthusiastic "Yes!"
I asked the jeweler about platinum, which I had heard of but knew little about. He explained that platinum is a rare white precious metal - a metal that doesn't fade, but actually matures with wear; a metal that doesn't flake, but stays intact. Platinum compliments the diamond that it cradles and brings out the gleam and brilliance of the stone. And surprisingly, I could afford to seal our commitment with a platinum wedding band. The ring was less than traditional, but then again, this wasn't your traditional engagement.
