The width is the "north-south" (from wrist to fingertip) horizontal measurement of the band. Jewelers are concerned with the widest part of the top of the band when on the finger. This area is used to determine settings for gemstones and the amount of room for any additional designs. Standard widths are between 2mm and 6mm, but bands up to 12 mm can be ordered. Wider bands allow for more design details and/or engraving.
